Wedding Cake

Eric Harshbarger made a lovely but LEGO huge wedding cake. It's really cool, but given that Russ and I were planning on having a small wedding (12 people), it made sense to have a small LEGO wedding cake. I love what he did for the minifigs on top of the wedding cake, so I borrowed that design for my own, with some modifications of course.

This was one of the few projects that I didn't want to do in just basic bricks and plates. I had to put quite a bit of detail and shape into a small place. Even though the cake is small, I wanted to have at least two tiers.

For the bottom, the white macaroni worked well under the round white plates. However, I wanted the flowers on the side ("On the side is a very big thing with you"). The bricks with the technic pegs proved to be a perfect mounting point for the large flowers. For garnish, the green LEGO vine worked well being intertwined between the flowers.

The top was relatively easy, but I wanted our names and the date on the bricks. I was seriously thinking of custom stickers, but they would peel off. Then Scott at the LUGOLA meeting recommended HPT Designs, who engraves LEGO bricks.

The top came fairly easy, once I had an idea of the size needed for the engraved bricks, and for the minimum space needed for the minifigs to be on the cake.

For the guests, we gave them a bride and groom, a green 4 x 6 plate, and an engraved LEGO keychain (2 x 4 white brick, which our names and the date). Special thanks goes to Tommy Armstrong of HPT Designs, because he really helped make the LEGO guest gifts and wedding cake work really nicely :-) Thanks also to Dave Johann for letting me use his rather large supply of LEGO flowers.

Some stats: palm-size, very light, two minifigs, lots and lots of LEGO flowers, about 30 white pieces, and very sore fingers (from replacing minifig arms and hands).
