Florida Gator

For my next project, I figured if I can do a script Cal, I should try to do something for my own alma matter. I toyed with the idea of a scripts Gators, a classic Albert (really complex), so I opted for the new logo, which is a gator head.I have this logo in several of my hats, however; the hat was not the best point of reference. Instead, I have a letterman style Gator jacket with a HUGE gatorhead patch on the back.

This is going to be a lot more challenging than Russ' Cal: as it requires a bit more detail and quite a few colours: Green (lots and lots and lots of green), red, white, blue, and orange.

I started with the eye, figuring it will be a bit bigger than Russ' Cal. Wrong. So wrong. The eye was detailed alright, but as it turns out, the Gator ended up being quite large.

It also has been very time consuming, taking three weeks to get it to this stage. After completing the eye, the lower and upper jaws were next, then the teeth. I spent about a week getting the teeth to look right-- and it's probably been the most frustrating of it all.

Lots of money and lots of green bricks later, I realise that this is going to be a while before it's finished properly. I finally finished the lower portion of the chin in light green bricks.

Now, the worst part is working on the outline, and it took the longest. I had reworked this about 12 times, and it was at least one more time before making the oval round. This project took a lot longer because of the amount of time the oval took in getting right. The gator itself was the easy part-- the oval was a major pain. Trying to create something round without any angled bricks is really a challenge.

What I found really helped was working on the symmetry of the oval. I tried to make the left side upper and lower portions of the oval symmetric, as well as the lower left and lower right sides of the oval. Once I did that, it made a tremendous difference.

Here is a picture of the gator head on the table. The other thing I realized is because it's so big, there is no way to pick this up without gluing it and having something solid on the back. This is something to keep in mind next time I want to torture myself...
