X-2 Moonbase Defender
Ever since I've got the classic space bug back in full force, I've wanted to a short range fighter (similar to an F-18) that is designed to protect the moonbase project. I have always loved the classic space fighters, especially the X-1 Patrol Craft, which is the main influence of this MOC.
Even though the X-1 Patrol craft is the main influence, there are other classic space craft that have influenced this (Space Dart I, Tri-Star Voyager, Lunar Patrol Craft, and even the Space Shuttle).
I really like the body design of the X-1 Patrol Craft. However, the rockets just seemed too big for a smaller fighter, but the small positioning rockets on the Space Shuttle never really seemed to be enough for power. So, a small compromisewas made: the positioning rockets with the rear ones with some more kick to them (note the red fins which provide it with some serious turbo kick). This gives it similar power, but without all the extra weight.
A standard on the X-2 is the double-barrell lasers on the front. These are great for firing warning shots or even dogfighting. This was originally found on the space craft in the Beta-1 Command Base. In addition to the double-barrell lasers, the X-2 also can carry four guided missiles.
The missiles are short-range missiles, designed to take out larger space craft. Enough of these little guys fired can level an entire enemy base if necessary. However, we must remember that these are defense fighters and not to be used for initial attacks.
The X-2 Moonbase Defender can take off from a landing pad (although it takes it a while to get up to speed). There are launchers being made to get the fighter up to full-speed quicker through a magnetic launching system.
The launching system will be available for the moonbase project in the near future. Please stay tuned for further reports.
